Geographical Indication Registration Services in India

Geographical Indication Services

Geographical Indication (GI) registration protects products that originate from a specific geographical region and possess qualities, reputation or characteristics essentially attributable to their place of origin.

What is a Geographical Indication?

A Geographical Indication is an indicator used in trade to identify goods as originating from a particular territory, region or locality, where a specific quality, reputation or characteristic of the goods is essentially linked to its geographical origin.

GIs are recognized as a form of Intellectual Property under the Paris Convention and the TRIPS Agreement. In India, GI protection is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which came into force on 15 September 2003.

Importance of GI Registration

  • Ensures authenticity and quality assurance for consumers
  • Prevents unauthorized use of the registered GI name
  • Protects the collective rights of producers in the region
  • Enhances market value and global recognition

GI Protection in India

Only authorized users or producers located within the defined geographical territory are permitted to use a registered GI. Darjeeling Tea became the first GI-tagged product in India in the year 2004–2005.

Examples of Indian Geographical Indications

  • Basmati Rice
  • Darjeeling Tea
  • Kanchipuram Silk Saree
  • Nagpur Orange
  • Kolhapuri Chappal
  • Bikaneri Bhujia
  • Agra Petha

Why Choose GI Registration?

A registered GI differentiates products in the marketplace by assuring consumers of their origin and unique characteristics. It strengthens brand identity, protects traditional knowledge, and supports regional economic development.
